Do not trade Allah’s signs for a small price
Verse: 2:41
Translation
And believe in what I have revealed confirming that which is with you, and be not the first to disbelieve in it; and do not exchange My signs for a small price, and fear Me alone.
Description
This verse urges Muslims to value Allah’s signs and revelations and not trade them for worldly gains.
Detailed Explanation
This verse in the Quran emphasizes the importance of sincerely believing in Allah’s revelations, which confirm previous scriptures, and warns against being among the first to reject this belief. It highlights the mistake of undervaluing Allah’s guidance by exchanging it for fleeting worldly benefits. This admonition serves as a reminder to prioritize spiritual truth and integrity over short-term material gain.
According to Tafsir Ibn Kathir, the revelation was directed at the People of the Book, particularly urging them to accept the truth of Prophet Muhammad’s (PBUH) message, as it corroborates their own scriptures. The warning against being the first to disbelieve aims to prevent the spread of disbelief, which can lead others astray. Exchanging Allah’s signs for a small price refers to sacrificing religious and moral values for wealth or societal status. This notion can be understood in contemporary contexts where individuals might compromise their beliefs for job promotions or social advantages.
The Quran’s guidance underscores the everlasting nature of Allah’s words, which should not be traded for the temporary allure of this world. Believers are encouraged to act with piety and obedience to Allah, remembering that true success lies in righteousness and adherence to divine guidance. Remaining steadfast and valuing Allah's signs lead to spiritual prosperity and lifelong fulfillment beyond this temporal existence.
