Spend seeking Allah’s pleasure for lasting reward
Verse: 2:265
Arabic Text
وَمَثَلُ الَّذِينَ يُنفِقُونَ أَمْوَالَهُمُ ابْتِغَاءَ مَرْضَاتِ اللَّهِ
Translation
And the example of those who spend their wealth seeking Allah’s pleasure and believing in the Last Day is like a garden on a high ground which is hit by a downpour.
Description
This verse teaches that spending money for Allah's pleasure will result in lasting rewards from Him.
Detailed Explanation
In this verse, Allah describes a very beautiful image to help us understand the rewards of spending our wealth with the intention of pleasing Him and having faith in the Last Day. Imagine a garden on a high, fertile land. When rain falls on it, the garden flourishes with fresh, luscious fruits. This is similar to the reward a person receives when they spend their money for Allah's sake—they will see their efforts flourish into greater rewards in both this life and the hereafter.
According to the Tafsir of Ibn Kathir, this verse emphasizes the importance of the intention behind our actions. It’s not just about spending money, but the reason why we do it. When we give to charity or help others, we should aim to earn Allah's pleasure, not recognition from people. The sincerity of our intention is what makes our good deeds fruitful.
Spending in the way of Allah is a recurring theme in the Quran, and it symbolizes trust in Allah's provisions. When you give with sincerity, believing in the Last Day, you are investing in your Akhirah (the hereafter), and as the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) said, "Charity does not decrease wealth" (Sahih Muslim). The purpose is to teach us generosity, selflessness, and to remind us that true wealth lies in our character and faith, not in our material possessions.
