Do not invalidate charity by reminders or hurtful speech
Verse: 2:264
Arabic Text
يَا أَيُّهَا الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا لَا تُبْطِلُوا صَدَقَاتِكُم بِالْمَنٍّ وَالْأَذَىٰ
Translation
O you who have believed, do not invalidate your charities with reminders or injury as does one who spends his wealth only to be seen by the people.
Description
Islam teaches us that charity should be given sincerely and not to show off or make the recipient feel bad.
Detailed Explanation
When you give charity, the intention should be pure, without expecting praise or showing off. This is because sincerity in your heart is what makes your charity meaningful. A sincere charity means your intention is to help for Allah's sake without seeking recognition or appreciation from others.
Tafsir Ibn Kathir explains that this verse reminds us that giving should not be followed by hurtful words or reminders about the charity given. Such actions can invalidate the good deed. The real value of charity is lost if the giver makes the receiver feel embarrassed or indebted. Instead, we are encouraged to be humble and kind, remembering that Allah knows what's in our hearts.
Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) taught us in a hadith found in Sahih Bukhari: "The upper hand is better than the lower hand," which means the person who gives is in a better position, yet the dignity of the receiver must always be respected. By observing these teachings, you nurture kindness and preserve the spirit of giving, realizing that your charity is for the sake of Allah, which ultimately enriches your soul.
