Give charity without reminders or hurt
Verse: 2:262
Translation
Those who spend their wealth in Allah’s way and then do not follow up what they have spent with reminders or injury—for them is their reward with their Lord.
Description
When you give charity, do it sincerely for Allah and do not remind people of your gift or harm them; in doing so, you will earn a reward from Allah.
Detailed Explanation
This powerful verse reminds us about the importance of sincerity and maintaining the dignity of others when giving charity. It teaches that contributing one's wealth in ways that benefit others—whether it be through donations, gifts, or support, must come from a place of genuine desire to help, free from any expectation of recognition or praise. The Quran advises that after making a charitable donation, one should not follow it up with reminders or actions that could make recipients feel burdened or embarrassed.
The significance of this rule is magnified in the context of our intentions and etiquette in charity. Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) emphasized the purity of intention in actions. In a hadith from Sahih Muslim, he stated, "The deeds are considered by the intentions, and a person will get the reward according to his intention" (Sahih Muslim, Book 42, Hadith 7061). Therefore, when you give, ensure that it is purely for Allah's pleasure. The act of reminding someone of your generosity can diminish the spiritual value of your charity, as it might hurt their feelings or make them feel inferior.
Tafsir scholars like Ibn Kathir elaborate that a sincere act of charity transcends material aid, offering profound respect and compassion towards recipients without expecting anything in return. This approach nurtures not only spiritual growth but also binds community ties and fosters love and mutual respect. When you follow this principle, as outlined in this verse, you are promised a reward from Allah and freed from fear and sorrow, assuring that your actions are beloved in the sight of Allah.
