Translation
They ask you what they should spend. Say, ‘Whatever you spend of good is for parents and relatives and orphans and the needy and the traveler.’ And whatever you do of good – indeed, Allah is Knowing of it.
Description
The verse guides Muslims to share their resources by giving to parents, relatives, orphans, the needy, and travelers.
Detailed Explanation
In this important verse from the Quran, Allah commands Muslims to share their blessings and wealth with those in need, starting with family and then extending to others in society. This expression of charity is a fundamental teaching in Islam. It underscores the importance of caring for one's family and broader community.
The Quran and Hadith frequently emphasize the virtues of charity. According to Tafsir Ibn Kathir, the verse denotes the order of priority for charitable giving, placing parents at the forefront, which underscores their high status and importance in Islam. Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) mentioned in various Hadiths, like one found in Sahih al-Bukhari, that the best charity is that which a person gives when they are healthy and keen, as it demonstrates genuine care and responsibility (Sahih Bukhari, Book 24, Hadith 12).
By highlighting recipients such as orphans and travelers, Islam instructs Muslims to extend their kindness beyond their immediate circles. This verse reminds us that Allah is aware of every act of goodness done by individuals, encouraging Muslims to be generous and compassionate, knowing that each charitable act is seen and rewarded by Allah.
