Compete in doing good
Verse: 2:148
Translation
For each [religious following] is a direction toward which it faces. So race to all that is good. Wherever you may be, Allah will bring you forth all together. Indeed, Allah is over all things competent.
Description
This verse encourages you to engage in and strive for good deeds, as Allah (SWT) will gather everyone and evaluate their actions.
Detailed Explanation
In this verse, Allah (SWT) instructs Muslims to focus on performing good deeds and to pursue them enthusiastically. It recognizes that different communities may have their unique practices and pathways, yet emphasizes that the race to goodness is universal and essential for all. This can be seen as a call to unity and a shared pursuit of righteousness, transcending the physical and metaphorical different directions people may face.
According to Tafsir Ibn Kathir, this verse was revealed during a time when there were disputes regarding the Qiblah (direction of prayer). It highlights a deeper understanding that while the direction in which one faces is important, more crucial is the competition in doing good deeds. The underlying message here is that good deeds should be the primary focus of a Muslim's life. A Hadith narrated by Anas ibn Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) states that the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) said, “None of you truly believes until he wishes for his brother what he wishes for himself” (Sahih Muslim, Book 1, Hadith 45). This Hadith encourages the same spirit of striving for goodness and wishing well for others.
The significance of this directive is vast. As believers, you are encouraged to not only perform good actions but to 'race' towards them, implying both speed and diligence. This means utilizing every opportunity to make a positive impact on those around you, fostering a community that values and supports good deeds. Additionally, it reassures that Allah's power is absolute, and wherever you are, He will unite you, accounting for your deeds. This further stresses accountability and the temporary nature of worldly divisions, urging you to focus on the everlasting rewards of good actions.
