Verse: 2:104
Translation
O you who have believed, say not [to Allah's Messenger], 'Raʿinā' but say, 'Unẓurnā' and listen. And for the disbelievers is a painful punishment.
Description
This verse teaches that Muslims should speak respectfully to the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) and use polite language.
Detailed Explanation
In this verse, Allah instructs the believers on the importance of speaking respectfully, especially when addressing the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH). The word 'Raʿinā' was originally used to mean 'look after us,' but it was also used disrespectfully by some people of the time. To prevent any disrespect, Allah directed the believers to instead use the word 'Unẓurnā', which also means 'look at us' or 'pay attention to us,' without any negative connotations.
In the context of the revelation of this verse, it's important to understand that language plays a powerful role in demonstrating respect. Ibn Kathir, in his Tafsir, explains that the Jews in Medina would twist the word 'Raʿinā' into a derogatory form. Thus, it was necessary to use different words to maintain the dignified status of the Prophet (PBUH). The verse also advises listening attentively, highlighting that true respect involves sincere engagement with the message of the Prophet (PBUH).
By guiding the believers to speak and listen respectfully, this verse teaches an important lesson about the power of words and intentions. Addressing the Prophet (PBUH) or anyone else with respect ensures that communication remains clear and sincere, fostering a harmonious society. It serves as a reminder that the believers should always approach all situations with good manners and consideration, staying away from actions or words that could lead to misunderstanding or disrespect.
